Wake the Great Salt Lake & Wahi Pana - Storied Places: Bloomberg Grantees Create Temporary Art in Utah and Hawai’i

In the third iteration of Bloomberg’s Public Art Challenge, 8 winners were selected from among 154 cities, including Salt Lake City, Utah and Honolulu, Hawai’i. In this session, we will learn about _Wake the Great Salt Lake _and its public art installations about the persistent drought that threatens the Lake and _Wahi Pana (Storied Places) _and how they are sharing  little-known indigenous histories of key destinations. 

Session Information

Format: Regular session/panel (roundtable, single speaker, etc.)

Uniqueness: This session seeks to highlight two important projects – one in Salt Lake City and one thousands of miles away, in Honolulu, Hawai’I, as project staff share their community-centered approaches and the importance of temporary public art.

Objectives: Attendees will: (1) learn about the Bloomberg competition and what went into the application process; (2) learn about both projects and the community engagement that went into the planning and implementation; (3) hear about successes and challenges of these multi-sited projects.

Engagement: Audience members will hear about the projects and be able to ask questions of the participants regarding the intent, execution, and successes and challenges.

Scalability: Community engagement and art installations can be done in any institution. While few projects are Bloomberg funded, the lessons learned are sharable with a myriad of museums and related sites.
