Beyond Field Trips: Meaningful Youth Engagement in Museums

ID: WMA2026_629

Track:

Many museums engage youth primarily through school field trips or simple interactive activities. But what happens when young people are invited to participate as creators, collaborators, and community voices within museum spaces? This panel shares case studies from three museums of different sizes and missions that are intentionally expanding youth engagement beyond traditional education programs. Presenters will highlight strategies that work in both rural museums with limited resources and larger institutions with dedicated youth programming.

Session Information

Format: Regular session/panel (roundtable, single speaker, etc.)

Uniqueness: Moves beyond youth programming toward youth agency, sharing scalable case studies from museums of dramatically different sizes, missions, and resources.

Objectives:

  1. Explore models for meaningful youth engagement beyond traditional education programs. Through case studies from three museums of different scales, participants will see how youth can participate as creators, collaborators, and leaders within museum spaces.
  2. Learn practical approaches for integrating youth voices into museum programs and spaces. Presenters will share examples including youth-designed exhibits, youth-led symposia, collaborative design projects, and permanent early learning environments.
  3. Identify strategies for adapting youth-centered initiatives to their own organizations. Through facilitated discussion and brainstorming, participants will reflect on how these approaches might translate to museums with varying missions, resources, and community contexts. Attendees will leave with concrete examples, program ideas, and a stronger understanding of how museums can support youth creativity, leadership, and belonging.

Engagement: After brief case studies from each presenter, attendees will participate in guided brainstorming around youth engagement challenges in their own institutions. Participants will discuss barriers, opportunities, and potential program ideas in small groups before sharing insights with the room. This format encourages peer learning and ensures attendees leave with practical strategies and inspiration they can adapt for their organizations.
