Foundations of Archival Matting: Non-Adhesive Techniques for works on paper

This introductory, one-day workshop provides a practical foundation in non-adhesive mounting techniques for works on paper and photographs. Participants will learn cornering and strapping methods, along with how to select appropriate archival materials for their framing or storage packets. Through hands-on practice with non-collection materials, attendees will build basic skills, understand when to undertake mounting in-house, and recognize when to consult a conservator or framing technician.

Session Information

Format: Full-day workshop (9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.)

Fee: $100, this will cover the cost of materials needed. Participants will leave with a toolkit which includes tweezers, cutting mat, olfa blade, bone folder, ruler, all in a plastic folder, and workshop handouts.

Uniqueness: This workshop bridges theory and practice through hands-on training, empowering beginners to make informed decisions about materials, techniques, and when to seek more expertise.

Objectives:

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Identify appropriate archival materials for matting 
  • Execute basic cornering and strapping techniques
  • Evaluate risks associated with mounting works on paper and photographs
  • Distinguish when to perform work in-house versus consulting an expert

Engagement: Participants will engage in hands-on practice of cornering and strapping techniques using non-collection materials, following guided demonstrations. The session includes opportunities for questions, discussion, and troubleshooting common challenges. Attendees will receive a small toolkit to support continued practice, along with resources for further learning. Emphasis is placed on building confidence through doing.
